Welcome to Uttlesford Wildlife

This website provides information about the wildlife that can be found in the rural countryside of Uttlesford in north-west Essex. Although, in common with the rest of the country, this area has suffered from the impacts of development and intensive farming, there are still many places where rare species and attractive habitats can be found.

The picture in our logo is Crested Cow-wheat, and Uttlesford is now one of the last parts of the UK where this species can be found. Ancient woodland with Oxlip, and chalk grassland roadside verges are specialities of the area. There are also marsh sites in our river valleys, and traditional orchards, both offering opportunites to see orchids.

Use the link buttons to see a list of Places to Visit and Special Verges to see, with suggestions for how you can help to conserve the wildlife of this special area on our Things to Do page. Use the Walks and Rides to get out into the best of our countryside.

OUT AND ABOUT

Spring butterflies like Comma and Brimstone are on the wing, and in the woods the Early Purple Orchids are in flower. Roadside verges show a mass of Cow Parsley, and some rarer things like Stitchwort.

CYCLE RIDE INFORMATION

If you take an early season ride on Cycle Ride One - Special Roadside Verges look out for the signs that have been added to the verge marker posts by Saffron Walden Museum and Essex Wildlife Trust which list the plants to look for. Get out there and enjoy our wildlife.
